Ah selfies – the social media phenomenon which has swept the internet by storm. All you need is the average smartphone, which comes complete with a basic digital camera and possibly a selfie stick, and you’re good to go! We all have that one friend who goes to great lengths to get the perfect selfie in a bid to gain more likes and boost her ego. And according to the American Psychiatric Association there is such a mental disorder as an addiction to selfies. This can be particularly highlighted by the kind of selfies which bring together a need for social approval, vanity and recklessness. Here are the top 10 most dangerous selfies, surfing the net.

Elevating your ego to new heights

This is the point at exactly which an inflated sense of self meets senselessness! Vanity triumphs at the expense of basic self-preservation. Perched up high at the top of Brazil’s statue of Jesus, this guy must be very confident that someone, up there high above the clouds (right where he is taking this selfie from), loves him. Protected by the angels, this fellow just grins into the sunlight, carefully angling his digital camera to get the maximum effect of the staggering height of the statue.

Bridging the gap

This stunning photo of the Brooklyn Bridge is taken nonchalantly, but our hapless selfie-orgapher. He might have at least bothered to look into the camera and smile proudly at the feat of getting atop the bridge. But perhaps he’s going for that too-cool-to-pose kinda image.

Heart of a Lion

Much has been said about the selfies with big cats and the lack of good sense that goes with them. This guy takes that to a whole new level by giving this less-than-amused lioness a big slurpy kiss on her snout. To ensure that he gets a good shot to post on Facebook and make all his friends super adventurous of his wild life, he actually uses the flash setting on his camera, much to the irritation of the lioness. Hopefully, she choose not to make a light snack of our wildlife photographer.

Gator gets his dental

This is where one hopes that this selfie is either photoshopped or taken by a tourist who is exceptionally clever at making good use of props. Alternatively, we have our fingers crossed that this is a wildlife Vet’s assistant giving the alligator his annual dental check-up. In any case, this is definitely too close for comfort. Who on earth would think that sticking their head into a live gators’ jaw would have a happy ending. We’re betting against the odds and hoping for the best!

Sitting on the ledge

We’re going out on a limb here and stating that the dame taking this selfie isn’t afraid of heights. She doesn’t seem to be afraid of plunging to the curb or being considered utterly foolish, for that matter either. With her bottom perched dangerously on the ledge, she takes the silliness to the next level by stretching out her limbs, and grinning wildly as the grey streets bustle below. Common sense has left the building folks!

A Shark’s Mains

This underwater selfie might have cost our intrepid photographer life and limb. Seconds before the great white shark’s clamps it jaws around him, the photographer takes the shot, just before becoming a rare main dish for the mammoth hunter of the seas. Having said that, fear not. We’re quite certain that this is a great selfie prank. In short, say hello to the fun and games of photoshop, as our photographer sits safely behind his computer desk.

Bearly-sane

Because of course, when you see a grizzly furiously charging your way you stop, strike a pose and take a selfie – making sure to get the massive hunter well into the shot. It might be a good idea to upload the selfie to your Facebook or Instagram immediately, otherwise the 400-poud bear may eat the camera, together with its subject and photographer, before the selfie even gets one single like. And what a tragedy that would be!

Hanging by a thread

We’re not sure by whom this photo was taken or how. Or even how the photographer is hanging into thin air. However, our eye for detail and cunning mind determined that this photo is taken high above the legendary Oxo tower wharf, on the South Bank of the river Thames in London. Ok, the large O.X.O. letter imprinted heavily on the building made for a clue which set us in the right direction. However, we’re pretty proud of ourselves!

Paragliding Para-selfing

Here’s a multi-tasker par excellence. The kind of person who needs to get things done efficiently and effectively, even while on holiday. Hanging from a paraglider, up high in the sky. No, nothing gets in our multi-tasker’s way. Not even being closer to the sun, that the sea (okay, not technically, but still, we’re sure it feels that way!

The Lion’s Mouth

An adult male lion’s mouth (see photo) is one of the most dangerous weapons on earth. Lions are known as apex predators, which means that they have no predators of their own and are therefore happily situated at the very top of their food chain. As if that weren’t enough to earn these feisty felines the moniker of king of the jungle, lions are also the only big cats to cleverly and efficiently hunt in packs. So it would make sense to stay as far away from it as possible. Getting up close and personal with said dangerous feline may be detrimental to health and go against self-preservation. Just sayin’… someone might want to resend that particular memo to our wildlife self-ographer here!
